About Playhouse Creatures
The year is 1669, a bawdy and troublesome time in England. Theaters have just reopened after seventeen years of Puritan suppression and the new king permits, for the first time, actresses to appear on stage. Audiences often come more to gawk at the female display than to appreciate dramatic talent. Focusing on five of the most famous of these "playhouse creatures," the play provides a moving and often comic account of the precarious lives of Restoration actresses as they struggle for recognition and a new role for women.
