'El Salvador in the Fight for Sovereignty and Social Justice'

Event Details: 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., October 17, Center for Global Citizenship

Saint Louis University's Atlas Program and St. Francis Xavier College Church will host an event titled "El Salvador in the Fight for Sovereignty and Social Justice: A Presentation with Community Organizer Esmeralda Villalta," from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Center for Global Citizenship.

Come learn about the political situation and social movement in El Salvador when U.S.-El Salvador Sister Cities visits St. Louis as part of its Midwest Speaking Tour with community organizer Esmeralda Villalta. Learn about organizing strategies that can be applied to the threats and how to stand in solidarity with the Salvadoran people as they defend their human and environmental rights.

In the 21 years since the end of its 12-year civil war, El Salvador has made advances in areas like education, health care, women's rights and the protection of free speech. However, the country is still plagued by high unemployment, gang violence and an entrenched oligarchy resistant to real change.

While the United States pushes increased militarization in Central America as part of the war against drugs, mining company Pacific Rim pursues its multi-million dollar lawsuit against El Salvador and the country prepares for presidential elections, organized communities across the country are fighting for alternatives of development that respect their culture, human rights and environment.

U.S.-El Salvador Sister Cities is a grass-roots network of 17 cities throughout the Midwest and East Coast working in solidarity with organized rural communities in El Salvador. Sister Cities works to connect and strengthen movements for social justice in the U. S. and El Salvador through accompaniment, education, advocacy campaigns and by supporting the women's, youth and community organizing work of its partner organization, CRIPDES.
