As part of the Department of Communication Colloquium Series, Diana Carlin, Ph.D., associate vice president of Graduate Education, will present "Applying Scholarship and Teaching to Civil Society Projects: A Case Study of Debate in the Republic of Georgia and Afghanistan" from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in room 336 of Xavier Hall.
Working through a non-governmental organization, Carlin developed the first political debates in the Republic of Georgia and conducted audience research on their impact. Comparisons to research on United States audiences will be discussed.
The presentation will also describe a project to develop British Parliamentary Debate clubs in seven Afghan universities as a means of preparing future leaders in communication and critical thinking skills. Preliminary data from the project's evaluation phase will be presented.
