Participants at the 2013 Billiken BEAMS Competition

The event is hosted by SLU's American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) chapter and Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology. Open to high school students in the metropolitan St. Louis area, the Billiken BEAMS competition is a group-based project opportunity in which students use their innovation to build a structure and then compete against other groups from the area.

This year's challenge is "A Bridge to Civil Engineering." Student groups will construct a supported road-based bridge model out of balsa wood. A road bridge is typically designed to accept a load in any position and permit the load to travel across the entire bridge. The winning team will design, construct and test the most effective bridge that meets competition evaluation criteria.

The competition is headed by Riyadh Hindi, Ph.D., P.E., Director of Graduate Programs and Interim Chair of the Civil Engineering Department at SLU's Parks College. Riyadh Hindi, Ph.D., will be available for interviews the week of the competition and on Saturday at the event.
