Parks College Hosts Third Annual Billiken BEAMS Competition

Event Details: 10:00 a.m., February 23, Chesterfield Mall, 291 Chesterfield Center, Chesterfield, MO 63017

The Third Annual Billiken BEAMS (Building Engineering Awareness in Metro St. Louis Schools) Competition will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Chesterfield Mall.

Civil engineering students (from left) Diana Byrne, Monica Stochl, Bradley Winkerbauer, Ryan Hughes, Tiffany Rando, Alli Gutenkunst, Brittany Davis and associate professor Riyadh Hindi, Ph.D.

The event is hosted by SLU's American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) chapter and Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology. Open to high school students in the metropolitan St. Louis area, the Billiken BEAMS competition is a group-based project opportunity in which students use their innovation to build a structure and then compete against other groups from the area.

This year's challenge is "A Bridge to Civil Engineering." Student groups will construct a supported road- based bridge model out of balsa wood. A road bridge is typically designed to accept a load in any position and permit the load to travel across the entire bridge.

The winning team will design, construct and test the most effective bridge that meets competition evaluation criteria.

The competition is headed by Riyadh Hindi, Ph.D., associate professor of civil engineering at Parks.
