Cirilo Sotelo-Avila, M.D., professor of pathology and director of pathology and laboratory medicine at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, will present "Pathology of Selected Developmental Vestiges" during Topics in Pathology at noon Monday, Feb. 7, in Pitlyk Auditorium C at the Learning Resources Center.
About the presentation:
Many anatomic structures of the human body are "leftovers" from embryonic or fetal life. They represent remnants of structures that existed during intrauterine development and have no known function in postnatal life. These remnants sometimes produce significant clinical problems including congenital malformations, hyperplastic overgrowth or neoplastic induction to form benign or malignant tumors. Developmental vestiges link embryology, teratology, oncology, pathology and clinical medicine.
