'Within Reach'Event Details: 7:00 p.m., March 20, Health Sciences Education Union
Saint Louis University's Student Occupational Therapy Association will host SLU alumnus John Foppe at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, in the Health Sciences Education Union Auditorium.
Foppe was born without arms, but he believes all things are within reach. As a child, he had difficulty doing the simple things most of us take for granted, and he led a life marked by dependency. At 10 years old, he couldn't put his own pants on. Today, he travels the world as an author and owner of a successful international training company.
Foppe's presentation "Within Reach" will recount his transformation from victim to victor and will focus on how to silence your internal self-critic, do more with less and stay motivated. "All things are within reach, when you reach within."
This event is a part of SLU SOTA's annual Disability Awareness Week taking place on campus March 19-21. The focus of the week is to raise awareness about disability rights issues.
"I believe that DAW is about helping others gain an understanding of individuals with disabilities and highlighting the abilities they have," said Mary Georgen, education chair for SLU SOTA. "It helps people to understand that although we all look different; we all face struggles and have the same feelings. The thing that I hope attendees take away from these events is accepting individuals with disabilities for who they are and what they can do. Respect and understanding is what we hope to promote."
SLU SOTA has several events planned for the week:
- St. Louis Rugby Rams Scrimmage at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in Simon Recreation Center
- Trivia Night co-sponsored with Billikens After Dark at 9:15 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at The Billiken Club in Busch Student Center
These events are all free and open to the public. For more information, contact Mary Georgen at email@example.com.
