SPICE Lecture SeriesEvent Details: 6:30 p.m., April 15, Center for Global Citizenship
The SPICE Lecture Series will host Akshay Sharma, assistant professor in the industrial design department at Virginia Tech, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in the C.S. Huh Auditorium in the Center for Global Citizenship. Refreshments will be provided. Find more information or RSVP for this lecture online.
Sharma will present "Designing Empowerment: Design Thinking for Social Impact." According to a recent World Bank report, women — who contribute half of the world's population by virtue of an accident of birth — perform two-thirds of the world's work, receive one-tenth of its income and owns less than one-hundredth of its property.
The Designing Empowerment Initiative at Virginia Tech explores the role of design as a catalyst for empowerment, especially for women. Interdisciplinary teams of faculty and students have created solutions for micro financing, vaccination and alternative energy for people living below the poverty line. Initiative participants believe if design is about creative problem solving, they should be able to address some of the most pressing issues of our times.
