8th Annual Pediatric Science Days

Event Details: April 03 - April 04

The SLU Department of Pediatrics will hold its eighth annual Pediatric Science Days and Research Symposium on Thursday and Friday, April 3-4. The goal for Pediatric Science Days is to bring together multidisciplinary investigators whose focus is on pediatric basic science, translational, clinical, epidemiology, outcomes or ethics research.

This research will be showcased at an all-day research symposium involving faculty and trainees at various levels (students, residents and fellows). The Pediatric Science Days Research Symposium will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the Danis Auditorium at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center.

The department typically hosts nationally recognized research visiting professors to share their expertise with trainees and faculty as part of this event. This year, the department will host Michele Mariscalco, M.D., associate dean for research at the Kansas University School of Medicine-Wichita. Later this spring, Mariscalco will assume a new leadership role as regional dean of the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Urbana. Mariscalco's brief biography can be found at the University of Illinois website.

Before her move to Kansas, Mariscalco was a pediatric intensivist and physician scientist at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas, where she gained extensive experience in the mentoring and training of residents and fellows both clinically and in the laboratory setting.

Mariscalco has been the recipient of numerous teaching and research awards, reflecting her exemplary skills in these areas. She has been the PI of several NIH-funded grants, including a fellowship training grant. In her current position as associate dean for research, she has been an enthusiastic advocate for the advancement of pediatric research, both on a national level and in her own institution.

Mariscalco will present a special pediatric grand rounds at 8 a.m. Friday, April 4, in the Danis Auditorium at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center titled "Research ... Patient Care ... What me worry?"

Mariscalco will moderate an academic roundtable for trainees and junior faculty and will share his experiences and provide advice to fledgling academicians at 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 4 in the Mund Room on the first floor at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center.
