The department of neurology and psychiatry will host joint Grand Rounds from 8-9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in Lecture Hall 1 of Schwitalla Hall at the School of Medicine. (Entrance is only through the Learning Resource Center (LRC).
Sophia M. Chung, M.D., is professor of ophthalmology, neurology and psychiatry at Saint Louis University. Chung received her medical degree from Duke University and completed her residency in ophthalmology at the Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine.
She stayed on to pursue a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship with John A. McCrary, III, M.D. Upon completion in 1990, she joined the Saint Louis University School of Medicine departments of ophthalmology and neurology where she has been a full-time faculty member for the past 21 years.
Dr. Chung serves as a director on the American Board of Ophthalmology after serving as an associate examiner for 20 years and sitting on a number of panels. She is a Fellow of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society and has served on its board as well as numerous committees.
She is active in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and currently sits on the BCSC Review Committee for Section 5: Neuro-ophthalmology, the instructional advisory committee for the AAO as well as the annual meeting program committee.
For her contributions, she was awarded the Achievement Award by the AAO. She has been a principal investigator for NEI-sponsored studies and is currently a member of the Neuro-Ophthalmology Research Disease Investigator Consortium. Dr. Chung considers her greatest contribution to the field of ophthalmology to be the education of residents. She has won five teaching awards, three best lecturer awards and was among the first awardees of the Distinguished Teacher Award for Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
