Edward J. O'Brien, Jr., M.D. '69
Dr. Edward J. O’Brien, Jr. received his bachelor of arts degree from Boston College, his doctor of medicine degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1967, and then received his master of business administration and master of arts, health services management, from Webster University in 1991 and 1993, respectively.
He was selected for membership in Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honorary Medical Society as well as Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society. After his internship and one year of residency in radiology, Dr. O’Brien was called to serve in the United States Navy. Upon returning from the Navy, he completed his residency in 1974. Dr. O’Brien then began his many years of service in the Department of Radiology at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, holding ranks as instructor, assistant clinical professor, associate clinical professor, and neuroradiology section chief. Dr. O’Brien’s hospital appointments included Saint Louis University Hospital, Forest Park Hospital (formerly Deaconess Central Hospital), and Des Peres Hospital (formerly Deaconess West Hospital). In addition, Dr. O’Brien is currently president of Eagle Imaging Consultants in St. Louis, having held several leadership positions with Central Radiology Group Ltd.
Dr. O’Brien has received many professional honors throughout his career. He has consistently served on boards and committees for many professional organizations such as the Missouri Medical Society, the St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society, the Greater St. Louis Society of Radiologists, the American College of Radiology, and the Missouri State Radiological Society. He is also active in the Boston College Alumni Association, having held several offices in the organization, and has served on the Board of Directors of Hockey USA.
However, it is Dr. O’Brien’s service and commitment to Saint Louis University and the School of Medicine that is most notable. He and his wife, Colette, have established a scholarship at the School of Medicine and are charter members of the White Coat Society. Dr. O’Brien also gives, extensively, of his time; specifically, he has given countless hours to academic teaching of students and residents in both the departments of anatomy and radiology. Students benefit from his contagious enthusiasm in learning.
In 2007, Dr. O’Brien was awarded the School of Medicine Alumni Merit Award as he is the epitome of a natural partner: for it is his commitment to service, not only in the classroom teaching students, but also his dedication to giving back and his commitment to supporting the Saint Louis University School of Medicine in every way that he can.
