University Adopts Student Learning Outcomes
After nine months of development, feedback, insights and suggestions from more than 450 Saint Louis University faculty, students and staff, SLU's University-Wide Undergraduate Student Learning Outcomes have been adopted. The highly participatory process informed multiple drafts of the outcomes between March 1 and Dec. 1, 2012. In December 2012, the final version of the Outcomes was approved unanimously by the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Committee, the Council of Academic Deans and Directors and the President's Coordinating Council. Their adoption fulfills the University's promise to develop institution-wide outcomes within the framework of The Five Dimensions.

SLU's mission and identity as a Catholic, Jesuit University served as the starting point and a touchstone throughout the process of developing, revising and refining the Outcomes. The result is that the Outcomes truly provide a means for the SLU community to demonstrate - to itself, first and foremost, but also to students and other constituents, including the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), its regional accreditor — that it is achieving the University mission consistently and coherently with regard to undergraduate students and their success. Evaluation of student achievement of University-wide learning outcomes is conducted to measure the performance of the University, not the performance of individual students, individual faculty members or individual programs. Accordingly, the development process was intentionally integrative, bringing together faculty and staff from Academic Affairs and Student Development units to engage in discussions that respect and embody the Jesuit heritage of educating the whole student.
Beginning this spring, faculty, staff and students will be invited to participate in conversations about implementation of the outcomes, as well as opportunities to engage in the process of developing rubrics that will help faculty and staff evaluate the University's achievement of the Outcomes. Units are invited to meet members of the Undergraduate Learning Outcomes Task Force to discuss the Outcomes, and the next steps in implementing and assessing them.
