A Jesuit for 67 years and a priest for 54, Father McCauley was born in Toledo, Ohio, May 30, 1926. He entered the Jesuit novitiate Sept. 7, 1943 at St. Charles College in Grand Coteau, La.
Father McCauley earned a B.A. in English at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., in 1949, and a M.A. in English from Fordham University in 1954.
He went on to receive a licentiate of sacred theology at St. Mary's College in Leavenworth, Kan., in 1958, and in 1965, he completed a doctor of sacred theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
Father McCauley served in most of the apostolates of the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus, including secondary education, higher education, pastoral ministry and retreat work.
He was an assistant principal at Jesuit High School in New Orleans and the Jesuit High School in Dallas.
Father McCauley also taught at St. Mary's College, Springhill College, Loyola University Maryland and SLU, where he served as acting dean of the former School of Divinity.
Father McCauley spent more than 30 years helping lead retreat facilities, including the Montserrat Retreat House in Lake Dallas, Texas, Ignatius House in Atlanta and Manresa Retreat House in Convent, La. He also was the pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Parish in WHERE for three years.
2009, Father McCauley was sent to St. Louis to pray for the Church and the Society of Jesus at Fusz Pavilion, a skilled nursing facility located in Jesuit Hall for the Jesuits of the Missouri Province.
Father McCauley was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary Ellen McCauley, and brother, John McCauley. He is survived by his brothers, Gerard B. McCauley, Martin J. McCauley and many nieces and nephews.
Wake services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, May 2, at St. Francis Xavier College Church. A funeral Mass will follow at 7:30 p.m. Burial will take place at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis.
