Research Interests

Hughes's research interests focus on Jazz and other American popular music styles, reception, and criticism with special emphasis on the relationship between musicians and the local markets and social forces that exist where they are active. His work to date has concentrated on Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars and the Saint Louis group Jazz Central. He is currently researching the role of music in Jack Gelber's play "The Connection" and a 1927 kickback scandal involving Local 2 of the American Federation of Musicians here in Saint Louis.

Community Work and Service

Hughes is an active woodwind performer and member of the MUNY orchestra. He appears frequently at the Fox Theatre, Repertory Theatre of Saint Louis and other venues in the area.
