Advocacy on Behalf of Latin Americans: Why Should We Care?
The St Louis Inter-Faith Committee on Latin America (IFCLA) has accompanied the people of Latin America in their struggles for human rights and social justice since 1982. We work through education and advocacy. This includes travel to Latin America and speaking tours for Latin American Community Activists and Leaders.
Presenters: Rosie Laughlin, Linda Kovac, Sara Schwartz. The presenters are IFCLA interns who are SLU students (social work, international studies and Spanish)
Immigration is one of our target areas of work. This event will look at how we advocate for and with Latin American Immigrants in St Louis: connecting people, challenging bias, advocating with legislators, marching for justice... Participants will be encouraged to share experiences and challenges and to find ways they can take the next step to do something to advocate for justice for immigrants.
We will also look at Honduras-- events leading up to the 2009 coup d'etat and the current human rights situation. Students will present research and will explore action possibilities.
