Distance Learning at the Margins: A Mission to Empower Africa's Exiled

Definition: Jesuit Commons: Higher Education at the Margins (JCHEM) is a two year old program which has drawn on the mission and resources of a group of U.S.-based Jesuit Universities to help educate African refugees in Dzaleka Camp, Malawi and Kakuma Camp, Kenya. The goal of this program is to empower these refugee students through accredited education.
This panel consists of SLU community members who have participated in this program at various levels. These faculty and staff will discuss their own experiences, from challenges encountered to highlights of success, that encompass teaching within the online environment, navigating a virtual interaction with refugee students, and coordinating program logistics to ensure program quality, compliance, and efficiency Join us as we explore thoughts and ideas of sharing an online education with this marginalized group of students, the hope that it offers them, and the lessons we can learn from their dual-lives as Africa's refugees and SLU students.
