Informal Recycling in Latin America: A Tale of Two Cities
Informal recycling is the occupation of millions of "bottom of the pyramid" populations in developing countries. In the presentation, I will explain how the informal recycling sector in two cities in Latin America -- Guatemala City and Bogota -- have followed very different trajectories with very different outcomes. I argue that when formal activities become legally formalized in a developing country city, then poverty alleviation and other positive externalities result. In this particular sector, recycling, formal recognition also yields important sustainability benefits.
