$3 Million Donated to SLU to Establish Bander Center

 Growing attention is being paid to the relationships physicians have with individuals, insurers, and industries that fund medical practice and research. Deciding these relationships warrant further study within academic medicine, Dr. Steven Bander has donated $3 million to Saint Louis University to establish the Bander Center for Medical Business Ethics. The mission of the Bander Center is to promote ethical business practices in medical care and research through the development of training and investigation opportunities for medical students, residents and physicians in practice. Dr. Bander envisions the Center immediately benefiting SLU students and physicians, but also expanding and having a positive impact on physicians across the country. Read More

Matthew Wynia to Speak at Bander Center Inauguration on April 8th, 2008

Matthew WyniaMatthew Wynia, MD, MPH, FACP will be the keynote speaker at the Bander Center Inauguration at 3:30 pm on April 8th, 2008 in the Learning Resource Center Auditorium. Wynia is the Director of the Institute of Ethics at the American Medical Association (AMA), and also sees patients at University of Chicago Hospital. The title of his talk is "Ethics and Pay for Performance (P4P): What is known of the effects of P4P on physician ethics and the patient-physician relationship?" Bander Center Staffing Reflects Interdisciplinary Collaboration

DuBois BakanasThe mission of the Bander Center can only be accomplished through collaborative relationships between experts in the fields of ethics, medicine, law, and business, at this university and at others. As a model for collaboration, leadership of the Bander Center will be shared by the Director James DuBois, PhD, DSc, from the SLU Department of Health Care Ethics, and Associate Director, Erin Bakanas, MD, MA, from the SLU School of Medicine. A multi-disciplinary board of advisors has been established to guide the Center's activities. Jeff Dueker, MPH, is serving as a full-time coordinator for the Bander Center during its startup year. Bander Center Current and Proposed Activities

The Bander Center's mission of promoting ethical business practices in medical care and research through the development of training and investigation opportunities will be accomplished in multiple ways, including lectures for medical students, a fellowship program for new physicians in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, consultations, CME opportunities, web-based resources, and an annual endowed lecture.
