Departmental Faculty and PhD student collaborate on Legal Perspectives in Bioethics

Associate Professor and Ph.D. Program Director, Ana Iltis, Ph.D., along with Professor Emerita Sandra Johnson, J.D., L.L.M., and Ph.D. student Barbara A. Hinze, M.A. recently co-edited Legal Perspectives in Bioethics published by Routledge. The volume examines the relationship between law/regulation and bioethics in both the United States and around the globe. Essays in the volume offer accounts of how law and regulations have affected the development of various areas in bioethics, including human subjects research, ethics committees, privacy, genetic information and testing, reproduction, organ transplantation, end of life care, and health care decisions for children and the elderly.

In addition to her 2006 book, Research Ethics, Ana Iltis is the author or co-author of numerous other published items, contributions to books, and lectures related to research ethics. She is an emerging expert on human subjects research and has published in other areas, including informed consent, organizational ethics and institutional integrity.

Dr. Iltis co-edited Pluralistic Casuistry with Mark Cherry and The Annals of Bioethics: Religious Perspectives with Mark Cherry and John F. Peppin. She is currently the co-editor-in-chief of The Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics, is the Associate Editor of The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, and has co-edited the November 2008 issue of The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, which will focus on health care reform.

Sandra Johnson is Professor Emerita of Law, Saint Louis University School of Law, and was the inaugural chair holder of the Tenet Endowed Chair in Health Law and Ethics. She regularly taught "Bioethics in Law" a cross-listed law course for students in the Ph.D. Program in Health Care Ethics. She has authored numerous books and articles and because of her expertise is highly sought as a presenter and lecturer.

Barbara A. Hinze, is Visiting Instructor in the Department of Philosophy, Villanova University, where she teaches courses in bioethics.
