First Annual Health Care Ethics Research Conference

Center for Health Care Ethics Research ConferenceThe Center for Health Care Ethics is pleased to announce the First Annual Health Care Ethics Research Conference, a research conference for undergraduate and graduate students to present research related to health care ethics to an interdisciplinary audience. This conference is designed to foster advanced academic discourse in fields related to health care ethics at the undergraduate and graduate levels, feature and affirm research by Health Care Ethics students as well as increase awareness of ethical issues in science and medicine to the university and wider community.

Center Hires Moral Theologian

Health Care Ethics Tobias Winright, PhDThe Center for Health Care Ethics has hired a new Moral Theologian. Tobias Winright, PhD joined the CHCE faculty in March of this year, and has taught in the Department of Theological Studies at SLU since 2005. Dr. Winright will be teaching two courses at the graduate level: Health Care Ethics in the Catholic Tradition; and Methods in Religious Ethics. He will also be teaching a Foundations of Catholic Health Care Ethics in the undergraduate minor.

2014 CHCE Drummond Lecturer

CHCE Distinguished Lecturer Larry Churchill, PhDThe 2014 CHCE Drummond Lecturer will be presented by Larry R. Churchill, PhD. The lecture will take place as part of the First Annual Research Conference at noon on March 21 in the SLU Learning Resources Center. Dr. Churchill will present his talk, “Patients: The Neglected Source for Medical Ethics.”

Student Updates

Tyler S. Gibb, J.D. Ph.D(c) has accepted a position as a Clinical Ethics Fellow in the UCLA Health System Ethics Center where he works with full-time ethicists on clinical consultations. The center averages approximately 300 consultations per year. Gibb sits on three ethics committees and also guest lectures in the Schools of Medicine and Nursing.

Ryan F. Holmes, MA PhD(c) is the newly appointed Assistant Director of Health Care Ethics at the Santa Clara University Makkula Center for Applied Ethics. He handles coordinating and teaching Health Care Ethics Internship, a yearlong course for undergraduates. He also provides ethics consultation and policy development to five partner hospitals. Finally, he helps add to the resources of the website and occasionally speaks with the media. In the past nine months he has been quoted in four print articles, had an op-ed in USA Today, and conducted two radio interviews.


Rachelle Barina, PhD(c) won the 3rd Annual Conference on Medicine and Religion essay contest for her paper, "The Dying Body and the Body of Christ: Cultivating a Vocation for the Sick in Catholic Discussion of Assisted Suicide."

  • Erica Salter, PhD was named Director of the Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics PhD Program
  • Jill Burkemper, PhD was named Director of the Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics Undergraduate Minor
  • Tobias Winright, PhD, presented on a panel about Oxford University theologian Nigel Biggar's In Defense of War (Oxford University Press) at the annual meeting of the Society of Christian Ethics in Seattle on January 11th, and he presented a paper on "The Limits and Possibilities of the Face" at the Third Annual Conference on Medicine and Religion on "Responding to the Limits and Possibilities of the Body" in Chicago on March 9th.
