LOVING London!

I’ve only been in London for about two weeks now, but I’ve already learned a TON about its culture. First, you don’t say “excuse me,” you say “sorry.” Second, you have to look right before you cross the street. Luckily they write on the streets which way to look before you cross them. Third, cookies are called “digestives.” I’ve also learned a lot about the London study abroad program. One cool thing I learned is that I study at Imperial College, which is one of the most difficult colleges to get into in London. I also live in Kensington, which is one of the wealthiest cities in the UK. I’ve heard rumors that the most expensive flat (or apartment) in my building goes for about £700 a week, meaning about 1400 American Dollars (sorry, they don’t have the dollar sign over here!) Luckily, I think I live in the best flat with about 15 ft tall windows that overlook a balcony, and even a loft area upstairs. Can’t beat that, right? When I started to look at the numbers, I realized it is almost 20,000 American Dollars to live in this flat for the three and a half months I’m here, and SLU doesn’t even charge that much for me to live here, use the electricity and water, and take classes. I’d have to say I made out :)

Aside from all of the fun things I’ve learned, I’ve also gotten some time to explore. I went to the Thames Festival last weekend, which is the BIGGEST festival in London. It was so much fun to walk along the river and see all of the concerts, tent sales, shows, sand sculpters, river races and ethnic food. This is a picture ofme and roommate, Kelsey. Behind us is the Thames River, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament!

Last night I went to my first play in London (Twelfth Night) at the Tricycle Theatre in London. It was different than I expected – more of a modern version of the play with no set or costumes. But it was funny! They took people from the audience and danced with them onstage. I think it was a good introduction for my Shakespeare class.

Today I’m off to Primark, which is a London Hotspot for women. They have stylish clothes for less, and with the current value of the dollar, I need all the help I can get!
