A trade center, city of poets, of kings and queens, cathedrals and traditions, London is a capital city of 8 million people. Straddling the River Thames, London offers green parks, museums, monuments and elegant shopping streets.

More than 40 live theater companies, five major orchestras, plus several opera and ballet companies make London their home. Scores of performances, concerts and recitals make London a cultural center of Europe.

The British Museum, the Queen’s Gallery, the Tate Gallery and the National Gallery provide opportunities to view many of the world’s great art treasures. More than 200 other museums and galleries covering a variety of subjects await the curious student in London.

London’s cosmopolitan atmosphere, heritage, innovation, youth culture and academic riches draw people from all over the world. In fact, London is the world’s most visited city.

In 2012, London became the first city to host the Olympic Games for a third time.

Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. The clock tower holds the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world.
