Summer at SLU, Saint Louis University’s new summertime community outreach initiative, continues to pack the summer months with plenty of camps and courses. The latest offering includes the Grand Arts Camp.

Craft Alliance and Saint Louis University are partnering to offer this camp to high school students from June 22 to Aug. 2. The full-day, two-week urban-themed visual arts camp will give students the opportunity to work in six different mediums (clay, metal, fiber, drawing, painting and printmaking) in both Craft Alliance Grand Center and SLU studios.

Enhanced by museum visits, an architectural tour and exposure to music and theater in the Grand Center Arts District, the experience will culminate with a student exhibition at Saint Louis University Museum of Art.

“This camp is a great opportunity for artistic students to immerse themselves in the art world,” said Troy Turnipseed, director of Summer at SLU. “SLU’s Midtown location and proximity to the Grand Arts District is perfect for this collaboration with Craft Alliance.”

Summer at SLU also includes camps and programs that were held on SLU’s campus during previous summers, such as the Gardens to Tables Culinary Camp. This program offers eight sessions for students from kindergarten through high school throughout the summer. It engages students in gardening, cooking and hands-on nutritional activities, with a different type of cuisine featured each week. Campers prepare a variety of meals and work with the professional chefs, registered dietitians and master gardeners to learn principles of good nutrition, gardening and a healthy lifestyle.

In addition to the 40 camps being offered at SLU this summer, advanced high school students and college students from any university can choose from more than 600 college-credit courses, in both traditional and online formats.

Turnipseed added that SLU isn’t just a place for college students in the summer.

“By spending their summer at SLU through a camp or a course, students of all ages become engaged with Saint Louis University, the culture and the excitement of a college campus.”

Summer At SLU is just 61 days away, and the new Grand Arts Camp is just 124 days away!

Made possible by the partnership between Craft Alliance and Saint Louis University, this urban-themed visual arts camp will give high school students with a strong interest in the arts the opportunity to work in six different mediums (clay, metal, fiber, drawing, painting and printmaking) in both Craft Alliance Grand Center and Saint Louis University studios.

This full-day, two-week immersion program is enhanced by museum visits, an architectural tour and exposure to music and theater in the Grand Center Arts District. By experiencing the arts using all senses, students will be encouraged to create work in the studios that develops their art-making skills and explores the overall urban arts theme. Culminating with the students’ exhibition at Saint Louis University Museum of Art, students will learn what it takes to prepare for a gallery showing while having their best summer yet!

Registration is now open.

December 2012 marked the commencement of an integrated advertising and marketing campaign for Summer At SLU, including radio spots, print ads, direct mail pieces, outdoor billboards, bus wraps and social media. In addition, a comprehensive new website was built to be a home for information about on-campus summer programs, courses, conferences, and event space. It also features a guide to Midtown’s restaurants, theatres and some of St. Louis’s unique attractions. Since its launch, the site has been visited nearly 2,000 times.

Outlining all of the summer opportunities at SLU, a comprehensive Summer At SLU catalog will be distributed and housed on the website in March 2013. The catalog will detail all the initiatives mentioned above and include information about Saint Louis University, the city of St. Louis and student life at SLU.

If you’d like to be included on the mailing list for the catalog, please email summer@slu.edu.

It’s Monday, January 28 and it’s currently 64 degrees in St. Louis. That can mean only one thing – summer is just 126 days away!

Still not sure, which one of our camps you want to check out this summer? How about the Sports Business Summer Academy?

Saint Louis University’s Sports Business Summer Academy at the John Cook School of Business is a special program developed to introduce rising high school juniors and seniors to the business of sports. During the four day program, students are introduced to basic business concepts related to sports through presentations by faculty and industry professionals.

Engaging in this new material, students work in teams to develop solutions to real-life sports business scenarios inspired by the experiences of area industry professionals. On the final day of the Academy, teams compete for prizes and present their final projects to a panel of judges. Awards are then given to participants at the closing luncheon, to which families are encouraged to attend.

Check-out the new and improved site, and register today! The Academy runs July 16-20.
