2013 welcomed a number of new summer camps and academies to campus including Camp Invention (an opportunity for 1st through 6th grade students to learn creative problem solving and teamwork through hands-on application of science, technology, engineering and math), the International Business Summer Academy (a forum for high school students to learn more about international business through lectures, experiences and hands-on activities), and the Grand Arts Camp (a two-week urban-arts program for high school students in partnership with Craft Alliance and culminating with an gallery exhibition at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art).
The Summer At SLU initiative seeks to build community awareness of activities occurring on campus between May and August as well as increase the number of visitors, revenue generated, level of community engagement and finally, the number of prospective students in years to come.
In addition, long-standing programs such as Campus Recreation Summer Youth Program, Allsup Summer Entrepreneurship Academy and Teen Connection to Social Skills experienced growth in the number of participants. Likewise, many of the sports camps reached maximum capacity with record numbers this year resulting in more than a 60% percent total increase for camps/academies across campus.
Summer conferences and events hosted 33 groups with a 17 percent increase in the number of overnight guests and a 46 percent increase in the number of beds occupied. Significant new, larger and longer conferences included: NEH Summer Institute, Jesuit Secondary Education Association, Foundations of Economic Education and the Medieval Symposium.
Campus was also filled with undergraduate and graduate students throughout the summer. Students could be found in class at the John Cook School of Business, lunching at Fresh Gatherings or studying outside the new Global Citizenship Center. Notably, the School for Professional Studies saw increases in their summer enrollment including a 142 percent increase in day school students over last year. Likewise, the one-year MBA program, which begins with the summer semester, welcomed a larger class.
