About Me
I am Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Director of the Center for International Studies at Saint Louis University.
Over the years I have taught a number of courses related to medieval Britain and Ireland at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I have also taught the Department of History introductory world history courses. As Director of International Studies I teach the Introduction to International Studies and Internship courses.
My essential research interests are focussed on medieval Ireland. I presently direct an archaeological excavation in western Ireland that is an interdisciplinary analysis of a medieval ecclesiastical site with a small castle in Co. Roscommon. I also conduct research in Bardic Poetry, medieval Gaelic theology, and the ideology of nationalism in medieval Ireland.
I’m a native St. Louisan and grew up in beautiful South St. Louis, but spent my university education at the University of Missouri-Columbia, the University of Chicago, and the Catholic University of America.
Hello Dr. Finan,
I wanted to leave a note to thank you for being such a remarkable role model for my daughter Katie Burke (ISG President). Choosing SLU for her undergraduate studies, her involvement in extra-curricular activities, and her on-campus job have made her Dad and me realize that her choice was “spot on”!
Please continue to inspire these young, impressionable, students and future leaders!
Have a wonderful holiday season!
Merry Christmas, Joni Burke
