Shaping Saint Louis with Bricks and Mortarboards
At the heart of a remarkable city. Before the city of St. Louis was incorporated - before Missouri was even a state - Saint Louis University was here. Founded in 1818, SLU has shaped the city that shares its name, educating leaders, finding solutions and investing in the people and places around it.
When you have a 200-year foundation of community commitment behind you, it's possible to build greater things. SLU is responsible for more than $2 billion in capital improvement projects in the city of St. Louis: The Edward A. Doisy Research Center, the Chaifetz Arena and a new $35 million project that will bring the University's law school to the downtown area (pictured), just to name a few.
An oasis of open space and vitality in Midtown, the University's St. Louis campus now spans 268 acres and boasts 131 buildings - but its impact doesn't end there.
SLU's continued investment in the area around it has set the pace for renewal. From 2002 to 2011, sales taxes in the Grand Center arts district neighboring SLU jumped from $734,354 to $1.7 million, according to a recent report completed by the consulting firm Tripp-Umbach.
And as one of the largest employers - and the largest developer - in Midtown St. Louis, SLU supports more than 6,800 jobs and generates more than $715 million in economic impact in one year alone.
But that's not the only way Saint Louis University gauges its success.
There are nearly 117,000 living SLU alumni working, volunteering and making the world a better place. In fact, a single graduating class from SLU has a projected future value of $2.7 billion to the St. Louis region alone over the next 40 years.
SLU has graduated members of U.S. Congress, several state governors and three St. Louis mayors. It is among the top producers of CEOs in the region, according to a 2012 article by the St. Louis Business Journal. Dozens of the area's economic leaders boast SLU degrees in finance, law, health care administration and others.
The University isn't just another school; it is part of the city's DNA.
SLU meteorology students provide forecasts for Cardinals games while Billiken basketball brings a mid-winter lift to sports fans.
Vital health care is provided through the physicians of SLUCare and University-affiliated medical clinics.
And SLU faculty, staff and students donate more than one million hours of community service in the St. Louis area each year.
What's the goal? An ever better campus. An ever better community. And a city that not only attracts students from around the globe but keeps them as the leaders who will take St. Louis into the future.
