Leadership and Human Resource Management

Leadership and human resource management focuses on both the human and organizational aspects of the workplace. Students studying human resource management at Saint Louis University take classes in management, as well as in organizational behavior and the management of human resources.

Leadership and Human Resource Management class

You can customize your degree by choosing electives, including coursework about small group behavior, organizational culture, talent management and family business.


Major in Leadership and Human Resource Management

In addition to human resources and organizational behavior courses, you will choose from other courses offered through the John Cook School of Business, including organizational failure, change and transformation; current problems in management; and fundamentals of leadership.

If you major in leadership and human resource management at SLU, you'll take 18 required credit hours in the area.

  • MGT 3300: Management of Human Resources Concentration
  • MGT 4101: Fundamentals of Leadership

Students will select two major elective courses from the following:

  • MGT 3301: Negotiations and Conflict Resolution
  • MGT 4102: Organization Failure, Change and Transformation
  • MGT 4103: Current Problems in Management
  • MGT 4301: Talent Management
  • MGT 4302: Compensation
  • MGT 4910: Management Internship

Students will then select one breadth elective course from the following:

  • MGT 3200: Managing Ideas in Entrepreneurial Firms
  • MGT 3201: Social Entrepreneurship
  • MGT 3400: Introduction to Sports Management
  • MGT 4500: Lengal Environment of Business II
Internships and Careers

Students who graduate with a concentration in leadership and human resource management from Saint Louis University go on to work in a variety of fields.

Possible career paths that use leadership and human resource management skills include strategic consulting, project management, leadership development, business process re-engineering consulting, compensation and benefits management, and human resources management.

Minor in Human Resource Management

The minor in human resource management provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of how organizations manage their labor force.

Students will be required to take the following courses:

  • MGT 2000: Legal Environment of Business I
  • MGT 3000: Management Theory and Practice
  • MGT 3300: Management of Human Resources
  • MGT 4301: Talent Management
  • MGT 4302: Compensation

Students then select one of the following electives:

  • MGT 3100: Organization Behavior
  • MGT 3301: Negotiations and Conflict Resolution
  • MGT 4910: Management Internship

Minor in Leadership and Change Management

Students can earn a minor in leadership and change management. 

Students are required to take the following courses:

  • MGT 3000: Management Theory and Practice
  • MGT 3100: Organization Behavior 
  • MGT 3300: Management of Human Resources
  • MGT 4101: Fundamentals of Leadership

And select one of the following electives:

  • MGT 3200: Managing Ideas in Entrepreneurial Firms

Note that students cannot take both  MGT 3200 and MGT 3201 when completing the minor.
