Saint Louis University

Minor in Catholic Studies

Offered by the Saint Louis University College of Arts and Sciences

  • Minor in Catholic Studies

Overview: Saint Louis University's Catholic Studies program explores the intellectual traditions of the Church from the New Testament to the present. Designed to explore questions that have occupied Christian philosophers and theologians, as well as artists, literary writers, political theorists, historians, and natural and social scientists, the program welcomes students of all religious faiths and all academic majors. This minor can complement a wide range of majors.

Curriculum: In addition to a variety of courses in the Christian intellectual tradition, Catholic Studies offers interested students opportunities to explore the history and mission of the Society of Jesus and the traditions underlying Saint Louis University as a Catholic, Jesuit institution.

Along with course work, the program offers a variety of social and spiritual activities and opportunities for community service in neighborhoods near the University. Co-curricular events include informal movie nights, field trips to local religious sites, weekly prayer and a spring day of reflection.

Faculty: Courses are taught by award-winning faculty who represent a wide array of interests, including philosophy, theology, English, history, art history and biology. Two recipients of the University-wide Nancy McNeir Ring Award teach in the program.

Careers: Students who graduate SLU with a minor in Catholic studies are pursuing careers in teaching, ministry and business. Others have gone on to graduate studies in theology and law. Our goal is to enrich students in every field as they look at their future work not just as a job, but as a vocation.

Internships: Some work study opportunities are available. Service learning provides students with potential contacts in the community.
