Can you explain the difference between Certification and a Certificate?
People often ask, "What is the difference between certification and a certificate?" To help avoid confusion in the industry, we have provided you the comparison below.
|Results from an assessment process that recognizes an individual's knowledge, skills and competency in a particular specialty||Results from an educational process|
|Typically requires professional experience||For newcomers and experienced professionals|
|Awarded by a third-party, standard-setting organization||Awarded by educational programs or institutions|
|Indicates mastery/competency as measured against a defensible set of standards, usually by application or exam||Indicates completion of a course or series of courses with a specific focus (different than a degree granting program)|
|Standards set through a defensible, industry-wide process (job analysis/role delineation) that results in an outline of required knowledge and skills||Course content determined by the specific provider or institution, not standardized|
|Typically results in credentials to be listed after one's name (CMP, CSEP)||Usually listed on a resume detailing education (CMM)|
|Has on-going requirements in order to maintain; holder must demonstrate he/she continues to meet requirements||Demonstrates knowledge of course content at the end of a set period in time|
Certification generally refers to an earned credential that demonstrates the holder's specialized knowledge, skills, and experience. Certification differs from a certificate program, which is usually an educational offering that confers a document at the program's conclusion. Accreditation of a certification involves a voluntary, self-regulatory process. Accreditation is granted when stated quality criteria are met.

What is the Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and why are they endorsing those companies that receive a Certificate?
Meeting Professionals International (MPI) is the largest and most vibrant global meeting and event industry association. The organization provides innovative and relevant education, networking opportunities and business exchanges, and acts as a prominent voice for the promotion and growth of the industry. MPI membership is comprised of approximately 18,500 members belonging to 70 chapters and clubs worldwide. For additional information or to join, visit www.mpiweb.org.
MPI will list the recipient and/or company to receive the Healthcare Compliance Meetings Certificate on their website. Each company recipient will also receive the MPI "Endorsed Seal of Approval".
Why would the Seal of Endorsement be important?
The MPI Seal of Endorsement would validate that a company or organization has received competency in healthcare meeting compliance. Clients are much more likely to work with a partner or supplier that evidences their knowledge of healthcare meeting requirements.
How does the Certificate and Seal of Endorsement work for an individual rather than a company?
A company can choose one or more persons as their representative to take the class. After the class, the Company will receive the Seal of Endorsement and they will be listed on the MPI website. If the Company Representative leaves the company, the Certificate goes with that Representative and the Company would have to assign a new Representative to take the class.
An Individual would receive the University Certificate but not be eligible for the Seal of Endorsement.
However, the MPI Seal of Endorsement recipients will be listed on their website and available to see by any site visitor. Also, a complete list of Individual Certificate recipients will also be listed and that list will be readily available to site visitors.
