The admission deadline for Fall 2008 is August 15, 2008. Special permission is needed from the Program Director to be admitted after this date. After participants have been admitted into the Certificate Program, they should register for courses in the following manner.

COURSE REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER SEMESTER 2008.

Participants should register for courses in the following manner.

List of Courses for Summer Semester 2008.

  • HCE.G589, Capstone Project: Ethical Case Analysis.

Monday, May 5 - Friday, June 13, 2008.

  • Course Registration: 1 Credit Hour.

Monday, June 16, 2008.

For participants not pre-registered, course registration begins. Cost per credit hour for 2007-08: $800. Continuing Education credits/units are calculated on completing minimally 1 credit hour of course work in this semester.

June 30, 2008: Official Start Date for Summer Session.

Students are advised to begin working on their Capstone papers prior to the official beginning of the summer session.

Students will develop one original case from their experience with supporting literature. Students will be assigned to small “virtual groups” and as they develop their cases:

  • Certificate students will post their individual cases via the internet for the rest of their own “virtual group.”
  • Group members in each “virtual group” will read the cases posted by their own group and provide comments/feedback/questions via online discussion to each of the authors.
  • Authors will consider the comments from the online discussion in revising the case prior to submitting it for grading.
  • The course Faculty will read one draft of the case and provide commentary on the literature and analysis.
  • After revising the case based on input from members of the “virtual group” and the course Faculty, each case will be submitted to the course Faculty for grading.

Thursday, July 31, 2008: Capstone Project Cases Submitted to Course Faculty.

COURSE REGISTRATION FOR FALL SEMESTER 2008.

It is recommended that students register for four courses in the fall and three courses in the spring.

  • HCE.G501, Foundations of Clinical Ethics* (must be taken in order to take additional courses)
  • HCE.G510, Informed Consent and Surrogate Decision Making*
  • HCE.G511, Death and Dying: End-of-Life Decision Making*
  • HCE.G512, Ethical, Policy, and Social Issues in Pain Management and Palliative Care
  • HCE.G503, Foundations of Catholic Health Care Ethics

An asterisk(*) indicates that the course is required in order to obtain the full Certificate.

Friday, August 1, 2008: Application deadline for new students.

Friday, August 22, 2008: Registration deadline; course readings available (via E-Reserves).

A late registration fee applies after this date. Immediately upon registering, financial arrangements must be made with Student Accounts. Registrations will be cancelled for students who have not made financial arrangements by this date. Cost per credit hour for 2008-09: $885. Continuing Education credits/units are calculated on completing minimally 3 credit hours of course work in this semester.

Participants should complete the assigned readings prior to attending the on-site seminar.

Thursday, September 18 - Saturday, September 20, 2008: First On-Site Seminar.

The on-site seminar begins on Friday morning for participants in the general track, and on Thursday afternoon for participants enrolled in the optional concentration in Catholic health care ethics.

Monday, September 22 - Friday, December 12, 2007: Distance Learning.

For each of the courses (with the exception of HCE.G501), participants will develop and analyze one standardized case. Participants in the optional concentration in Catholic health care ethics will be required to incorporate into their case analyses issues of Catholic health care ethics.
