The Essential Elements of CPE include:

• The actual practice of pastoral care ministry to persons ("living human documents")
• Detailed reporting and evaluation of that ministry practice ("verbatim")
• Pastoral, educational supervision in individual and group settings
• A process conception of learning ("clinical method")
• A theoretical and theological perspective on all elements of the program
• A small group of at least 3 peers in a common learning experience
• A specific time period (a unit = 400 hours: 100 educational + 300 clinical)
• An individual contract for learning consistent with the objectives of ACPE-CPE
• Conducted under the auspices of an ACPE certified supervisor (faculty) attached to an ACPE accredited CPE center.
