Service
Learning at The Reinert Center for Teaching Excellence
Working collaboratively with the Center for Leadership and
Community Service, the Center supports the University’s
mission of “being men and women for others”
in the development of curricular and co-curricular service-learning
opportunities. Service-Learning is the pedagogy that links
service and academic study so that each strengthens the
other, producing a greater impact than either could have
produced separately. What distinguishes service-learning
from other volunteer experiences are the intentional academic
integration of service and learning and the reciprocal nature
of both the service and the learning among all parties in
the relationship: students, faculty, and community partners.
The
Center offers a full range of support to faculty who desire
to incorporate service-learning into their curricula. Center
staff is available to make classroom presentations about
the service-learning component of the course, as well as
coordinate the placement of students in appropriate, faculty
approved service-learning sites, harmonious with faculty
course objectives. Additional support includes participation
in the sound development of student-faculty-community organization
relationships, and assistance in the preparation of reflection
materials and/or the facilitation of reflection sessions
by request.
