Chick-Fil-A at Saint Louis University
Chick-fil-A President and Chief Operating Officer, Dan Cathy, recently told Baptist Press that Chick-fil-A is "very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit." Baptist Press posted the original story July 16, 2012 . After Baptist Press re-posted the story, related articles soon surfaced in the Huffington Post, Associated Press, USAToday, Los Angeles Times, Fox News, and other news agencies regarding same-sex marriages.
Who is Chick-fil-A?
Chick-fil-A originated and owns the rights to a distinctive system for marketing, preparing and selling certain chicken and other food products. Chick-fil-A is one of a number of regional or national brands that provides dining services on the Saint Louis University campus. Starbucks, Au Bon Pain, Subway and Salsaritas are other brands offering dining services through Chartwells at Saint Louis University.
Chick-fil-A Company Philosophy
Chick-fil-A is a family-owned and family-led company. The company "applies biblically-based principles to managing the business." For example, Chick-fil-A believes in closing on Sundays. There are over 1,600 Restaurants run by independent Owner/Operators. Going forward, "their intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena." A press release was published on September 18, 2012 updating Chick-fil-A practice to include cessation of donations to anti-gay organizations. Visit www.chick-fil-a.com for more information.
Chartwells and Chick-fil-A Contract/Agreement
Saint Louis University has an agreement with Chartwells to provide dining, catering, convenience store services, and nationally branded concepts on campus. Chartwells, through Compass Group USA, Inc., is the franchise partner with Chick-fil-A. Chartwells operates under a master License Agreement with Chick-fil-A. The effective date of the master Agreement was February 1, 1997. Spanning about 12 years, Chartwells' Agreement with Saint Louis University began June 7, 2002 and is set to expire June 6, 2014. At that time, the Chick-fil-A dining services operation will terminate or expire. Chick-fil-A was chosen by students, clients, and Chartwells based on campus surveys and student input. Per the Agreement, Chick-fil-A is a vendor in good standing contractually with Chartwells.
Saint Louis University Procurement and Purchasing Philosophy
At Saint Louis University, vendors are chosen based on their legal standing, price of products or services, quality of products or services and the input of our students and other stakeholders. Saint Louis University understands that the exchange of ideas and the opportunity to critically analyze and express different viewpoints is essential to the University's mission, which emphasizes the pursuit of truth for the greater glory of God and for the service of humanity. Saint Louis University is confident that our students, faculty, staff and guests can and will make decisions on which businesses to patronize for reasons that reflect their personal values without the University playing a role in dictating those decisions.
