Department of Health Management & Policy
We are committed to improving global health and eliminating health disparities through our teaching, research and service
The department's Master of Health Administration program has been providing students with the highest-quality health management education since 1947, and it was recently named among the top ten graduate programs for healthcare management by U.S. News & World Report.
The curricula of the department are guided by a set of competencies for each degree program, which have been developed by the faculty in conjunction with our alumni, preceptors, and other prominent health care leaders. Each set of specific competencies is organized into six domains: leadership, critical thinking, management, science/analysis, political and community development, and communication.
These identify the knowledge, skills and abilities essential for launching a career in health management or policy and lay the foundation for professional development that prepares graduates to advance over time to roles as senior executives or policy makers, analysts, or advocates.
To maintain ongoing awareness of the many challenges impacting health and health services, the department has a Health Management & Policy Advisory Group, consisting of senior level practitioners, including department alumni, representing major sectors of the health industry.
This group meets periodically to provide insights concerning developments in the field and advise the department on how it can best achieve its mission of training skilled, ethical and visionary leaders dedicated to improving the health of the populations they serve.
- Master of Health Administration (MHA)
- Master of Public Health in Health Policy (MPH-HMP)
- PhD in Public Health Studies with a concentration in Health Management and Policy
Each program is offered jointly with other degrees of the University. Specifically, the MHA is offered as a dual degree with the Master of Business Administration (MBA), the Juris Doctor (JD), and the Bachelor of Science in Health Management. The MPH-HMP is also offered as a dual degree with the Juris Doctor.
The department also offers an Executive Master of Health Administration (EMHA) program designed to fit the needs of working professionals looking to advance their careers. This program utilizes state-of-the-art distance learning technology that allows students to set their own schedules and access online lectures and coursework from any location, minimizing time away from work and family.
Mission: To facilitate the transformation of motivated and service-oriented early careerists and working healthcare professionals, through practice-integrated learning, into highly competent, ethical leaders across the health industry.
