The MPH in Global Health prepares students to understand the cultural, political, historical, and geographic factors that impact health in countries around the world with an emphasis on health in lower, middle-income countries and on health equity. Students are prepared to effectively work with and in communities, while recognizing, adapting and responding to unique contexts. Students are required do their practice experience outside of the United States.
Joint Concentration Options
Students can combine the MPH in Global Health with a number of other concentrations, allowing them to expand their knowledge in both areas. A joint concentration degree combines the competencies of each concentration. The joint concentration options for Global Health are Epidemiology, Environmental and Occupational Health and Maternal Child Health. These degrees require 54 credit hours for completion.
Competencies are student outcomes - both knowledge and skills - that are specific to the degree and to the area of study. They reflect the knowledge and skills that we strive to develop in our students and form the basis of our evaluation of each student's achievement. For the MPH, there is a set of core competencies and set of discipline-specific competencies that guide the development of the curriculum. The competency sets are developed with input from current public health practitioners, our alumni, our faculty and our students to reflect current and future needs of the profession.
Global Health Concentration Competencies
- GLOH 1: Assess major forces that influence the health of vulnerable populations from a global perspective
- GLOH 2: Prioritize health programs for communicable and non-communicable diseases in low- and middle-income countries with limited resources.
- GLOH 3: Utilize a multidisciplinary approach to evaluate programs in low- and middle-income countries, and in poor communities in the U.S., that provide health programs.
- GLOH 4: Respond to urgent health problems in low- and middle-income countries, including humanitarian crises and epidemics.
- GLOH 5: Plan programs, policies and/or specific interventions to improve health services, or health status of individuals and communities.
- GLOH 6: Effectively utilize the tools and channels of diplomacy to implement health programs across cultures, and across borders.
- GLOH 7: Utilize appropriate cultural competency and communication skills via a mentored global health practice experience in a developing country.
The MPH in Global Health prepares students for competitive positions throughout the world. Examples of the types of organizations our students are prepared to join are:
- Government and international health agencies such as CDC, WHO, PAHO
- International NGOs
- Faith-based public health and global health missions and relief organizations
- Fellowships with organizations such as USAID (United States Agency for International Development)
- Global health practice as a physician, nurse or public health leader
- Multi-national corporations
- Diplomatic organizations and international relations
Faculty and Research
Several faculty across the College, including many in Health Management and Policy and Social Work, conduct global research. Faculty research ranges from understanding health systems in developing countries to disease prevention to social policy. Examples of some of the research topics include:
- Community Interventions to improve maternal and reproductive health
- HIV prevention
- Portable water folders for prevention of diarrheal disease
- Infectious disease prevention
- Impact of microfinance on community health
- Policy development related to contamination of toxic metals
- Promoting evidence-based assessments and solution to environmental health problems
- Impact of environmental pollutants on infant and child health
- Relationship between breastfeeding, infant sleep, and infant sleep arrangement
- Risk factors for extensive smartphone use in children
MPH Practice Experience
Students in the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program are required to complete a practice experience (internship) with an approved community health organization and preceptor. This 320-hour experience is designed to enhance students' educational experiences and promote professional competence in Epidemiology.
Internships in this concentration might involve the following activities: performing or assisting with cluster and outbreak investigations, community needs assessments, analysis and validation of existing data sets, and field research in order to study the spread, prevention and control of chronic and infectious disease and disease conditions in a community or a group of persons. Examples of organizations that have sponsored internships include: BJC HealthCare, Pan American Health Organization, and St. Louis Integrated Health Network.
The Master of Public Health with a concentration in Global Health prefers applicants to have a bachelor's degree in a social science, biomedical science, or a closely related field. Documented working proficiency in both English and in a second language is required to complete the MPH in Global Health. Students who must improve their language skills to meet these requirements will be provided guidance on how to find opportunities to improve their foreign language skills.
