Advanced Standing, Comparable Work & Transfer Credits

Advanced Standing

Students with a bachelor's degree in social work may be granted up to 18 hours of advanced standing in the MSW Program provided that:

    • The degree is from a CSWE-accredited program
    • The content of the student's undergraduate program is similar to that of the current professional foundation content in  the MSW Program
    • The student received a grade of 'B' or better in each of the courses for which advanced standing is requested (not a 'B-' or below.)

*Approved by the Student Affairs committee, MSW Program Committee, and School Assembly in Spring 2010.

Comparable Work

Students who believe they have completed comparable undergraduate coursework in the areas of Research, Human Behavior and Environment, or Social Policy, but who do not have a Bachelor of Social Work Degree from a CSWE-accredited program, may petition the MSW Program Director to review the comparability of the course(s).

To be eligible, the student must have received a grade of "B" or better in the course(s), and have completed the course(s) within five years (seven years for those students who have been employed full-time for two or more years in a social work position). The student must provide a syllabus for the course(s) showing what was studied.

For any course(s) that the MSW Program Director certifies as comparable, the student will not have to take the corresponding MSW Program foundation course, however course credit will not be granted. The student instead will take additional elective(s) to complete the required 57 credit hours for graduation.

Transfer Credits

Students may transfer a maximum of 27 credits earned in a CSWE-accredited MSW Program, provided that the coursework was completed within the last five years (seven for those students who have been employed full-time for two or more years in a social work position) and that the coursework was completed with a grade of "B" or better.

Transfer credits should be discussed with the Director of Admissions as a part of the admission process.

The Director of Admissions will advise the applicant regarding the process of transfer and required documentation.

The Director of the MSW Program makes the final decisions regarding eligible transfer hours.

Required Documentation

In all situations where students desire to receive consideration of courses completed at another institution and applied in some way toward the MSW degree, they have the responsibility of providing the necessary documentation to demonstrate the comparability between such courses and those of the MSW program at Saint Louis University.

Required documentation may include transcripts, course syllabi, and papers or other assignments prepared for the course(s) that are to be reviewed for comparability or transfer. The Director of Admissions will provide the student guidance in the necessary documentation required for the desired action.

Decision as the transferability of credit are made by the Director of the MSW Program and are final.

Applicants who believe they may be eligible to transfer credits should discuss this with the Director of Admissions as a part of the admission process.
