Professor Wilson has a background of 25 years in social work practice with families, children, and youth. Much of her experience combined clinical and community practice skills, working with low-income mothers and their children, including single parents, adolescent parents, parents trying to overcome abusive childrearing practices, and parents with mental retardation.

These experiences led to partnerships with early childhood and infant development providers. She also worked with self-help and advocacy groups to support client empowerment for families of individuals with mental illness and families of children with disabilities. Her practice experience crosses the fields of child welfare, mental health, developmental disabilities, children's residential services, and social work practice in public and alternative schools.
