Leading the fight against West Nile virus, School of Public Health student Elvir Begic, shown here on the front page of the Health section in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, studies mosquitoes in his position as an intern with the Jefferson County Health Department. Begic serves an environmental health worker collecting mosquitoes.

Jefferson County had its first batch of mosquitos test positive earlier this month. The lack of rain this summer has not reduced the threat of the virus spreading according to health officials. Begic has been working to collect mosquitoes from traps that he set up along a stream in Arnold.

Jefferson County hopes to test the mosquitoes to examine the spread of the West Nile virus. Begic is currently finishing up his Master of Public Health with a concentration in environmental and occupational health.
