Hemla is an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling and Family Therapy at Saint Louis University. Prior to teaching at SLU, Hemla served as an Assistant Professor at Southwest Missouri State University and Coordinator of Career and Mentor Programs at Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts. She received her doctorate in Education Psychology-Counselor Education from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, specializing in career development and multicultural/diversity counseling. Research interests include multicultural counseling issues; career development of diverse populations including gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals; international students; and utility of social constructionism in counseling these populations.
