English as a Second Language

The English as a Second Language program, which has been at Saint Louis University since 1966, offers an Intensive English Program, as well as university-credit courses. The Intensive Program includes classes at Intermediate and Advanced levels. Instruction focuses on developing academic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The program's objectives are to prepare students for study in undergraduate and graduate programs, and to introduce them to the U.S. culture. The paper-based institutional TOEFL is given at the end of each semester.
ESL courses include:
- Speaking and Conversation Skills
- Advanced Pronunciation
- Reading and Writing
We also off an 8-week summer program, "Missouri: Hollywood and History", which offers intense language practice, field trips, and a focused look at our special, regional culture.
University-credit courses include:
- Introductory composition
- Argumentation and research paper writing
- Research paper writing and documentation for graduate students
- Introduction to Literature
