Major and a Minor in Italian Studies now available!
The Italian Program at Saint Louis University offers a Major, a Minor and a Certificate Program in Italian Studies with a multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary focus.
Major in Italian Studies
The focus of the Italian studies major is the development of linguistic proficiency within a multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary context. The program requires 27 hours of upper-division classes. Of these, 18 must be taken in the Italian Division. These must include: Oral and Written Communication I and II. Outside the Italian Division, 9 hours of upper-division classes are required. For these courses, the approval of the Department of Modern & Classical languages is required.
?Students are also strongly encouraged to select a second major; virtually any other discipline can be considered (e.g., history, political science, psychology, theology, the sciences and others). By becoming a double major, students will significantly improve opportunities when entering the work force, particularly in the areas of government service, or when applying for graduate study, especially in language and area studies programs.

Minor in Italian Studies
The Italian Studies Minor consists of 15 hours of upper-division courses. Of these, 9 must be taken in the Italian Division. Outside the Italian Division, 6 hours of upper-division classes are required. For these courses, the approval of the Department of Modern & Classical languages is required.

Certificate Program in Italian Studies
The Certificate includes 4 pre-requisites and 3 electives, for 21 credit hours, and a capstone paper, for zero credits. 12 Credit hours of required courses (three levels of Italian language: IT-A110, Communicating in Italian I, IT-A115, Communicating in Italian II, IT-A210, Intermediate Italian: Language and Culture, plus any upper division course in Italian), and 9 credit hours of additional requirements in courses relating to Italian Culture. During their last semester, students register for IT-A490 - Italian Studies Capstone Paper, for zero credits.
The language sequence 110, 115, 210 fulfills the three-semester language-requirement for many programs offered by the College of Arts and Sciences. Courses relating to Italian culture typically include courses in Italian Cinema (such as IT-A320), Literature and Culture, taught in English, and courses already offered in other Departments, whose focus is either specifically on Italian cultural, historical and artistic issues, or on general linguistic issues.
All courses that stress Italian writers, or studies in the Italian or Italian-American tradition may be proposed for inclusion (e.g., courses on the history of Italian immigration, or on Italian Jewish communities and the holocaust, on the transmission of Petrarchism in Renaissance Literature, etc.). Courses from among this second class count towards the Certificate only with the approval of the Department of Modern and Classical languages.
