Delta Phi Alpha Members Initiated

2008 Delpta Phi Alpha Inductees On Friday, April 18th, 2008, 5 new members of the Kappa Phi chapter of the National German Honor Society Delta Phi Alpha were initiated by faculty advisor Dr. Evelyn Meyer. Maslenitsa The Taste of Russia class and the Russian Club invited everybody to a party celebrating "Maslenitsa" (Russian Butter week or Mardi Gras) on Thursday, March 6th, 2008. Language Villa Open House

LOOKING FOR A UNIQUE LIVING EXPERIENCE? Come learn about the Language Villa, Monday, February 4th, 2008, from 4:30pm - 6:00pm in Notre Dame hall.

The Language Villa is a learning community created for students with a passion for exploring different cultures through language. Students with an interest in French, German, Italian or Spanish, with the assistance of a native-speaker graduate student for each language, develop their linguistic skills and cultural knowledge through activities involving conversation, cultural events and common course work. November 2nd - 3rd, 2007

German Language Weekend

On Friday and Saturday, November 2nd and 3rd, 2007, the German divisions at St. Louis University and Webster University held their annual Sprachwochenende at the Henry Lay Center for Education and the Arts in Louisiana, MO.

Upon arrival, students swore the Spracheid (language oath) on a copy of Kontakte, swearing upon their honor as German students to speak only German the entire weekend. Activities included games such as Pictionary, the film "Alles auf Zucker", conrete poetry, Autrian culture and language, sketches, and, of course, Kaffee und Kuchen.

19th Departmental Colloqium

Dr. Pascal Boyer

The Department of Modern & Classical Languages 19th Colloquium will take place on Friday, Nov 9, 3:30 PM, in BSC 251. The speakers will be Dr. Pascal Boyer, Henry R. Luce Professor of Individual and Collective Memory at Washington University (Departments of Psychology and Anthropology), with a talk titled "What is memory for?", followed by Dr. Pascale Perraudin, Associate Professor of French, with a talk titled "What Does Representation Do to Memory?".

Talks will be followed by a discussion and a reception.

Sept. 25, 2007

H & H

On Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 in the Studio Theater of Xavier Hall, the Argentinian theater group "Tres x Tres" presented H & H by the Argentinian writer, Eduardo Bonafede. The play deals with the psychological and socio-economic consequences of the "guerra sucia" in Argentina. The play was performed in Spanish, admission was free, and about 70 to 80 attended.

Perceiving Napoleon

On Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 4:30 in the Knights Room of Pius Library, Dr. Anna Amelung (Adjunct Professor of French and Italian) gave an illustrated talk on "Ancient Origins of Napoleon's Symbols of Power". Following the presentation, the Department's three Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (Belén Gauna, Verena Hufgard and Guillaume Teboul) commented on how Napoleon is perceived in their respective countries. All of this was in connection with the exhibit on "Symbols of Power, Napoleon and the Art of the Empire Style, 1800-1815" currently running at the St. Louis Art Museum. Light refreshments were served to the approx. 80 attendees.

Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature

Julia Lieberman, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Spanish Language and Literature, Sephardic Studies and Israeli Culture will be facilitating the Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature reading and discussion series. 5 books relating to the theme Neighbors: The World Next Door will be presented. Pre-departure and Re-entry Courses to strengthen the study abroad experience

Cross-Cultural Preparation for Study Abroad and Re-entry from Study Abroad are 1-credit courses cross-listed in Modern Languages and Honors Program as well as International Studies attributes that are designed for students majoring in all fields who study outside the US.
