Spanish Minor Requirements

To be admitted into a Spanish Minor:

  1. Have at least a 2.00 cumulative average.
  2. Have received a C or better in any prerequisite(s) required for upper division courses in the minor
  3. Fill out an application for the Minor in the Dean's Office and be accepted by the apropriate department director (Chair/Spanish Minor advisor)

To Complete a Minor:

  1. A Minor in Spanish requires 18 credits hours:
    • SPAN 310.......3 credits
    • SPAN 315 ..... 3 credits
    • SPAN 410 ..... 3 credits
    • SPAN 415 ..... 3 credits
    • 2 Upper division.....SPAN 416 and up
  2. All courses must be completed with a grade of C or better in SLU upper division courses.
  3. Transfer students must complete at least two courses in residence at SLU.
  4. SPAN 416 and up elective must be taken in Spanish.
  5. Must be in Spanish or Latin American Literature, Latin American Contemporary Civilization and Culture, or one from each category.

SPAN 420 should be completed before taking any SPAN literature class.

We strongly encourage to meet with the Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences (Stephen Dina) for approval of any course taken off campus.

When dropping from Major to Minor, not all the classes taken will necessarily count towards the Minor. Requirements vary.

Note: Students can request permission from the Spanish Minor Advisor to take one upper division Spanish class conducted in English, provide that they pass the evaluation instruments that have been used for awarding the Spanish Certificate of Proficiency at Saint Louis University. (See minutes of November 8/2005), in any case, he/she may take a course (from the approved list) to count as part of the Spanish Minor. The approved list of Spanish class conducted in English is the following: Sp 421 Language and Linguistics, Sp 422 Issues in Second Language Acquisition, Sp 430 Latin American Thinkers, SP 436 Women.s Literature in Latin America, Sp 459 Western Sephardi Diaspora, and Sp 467 20th Century Spanish Thought (see Minutes of November 22/2004).
