These courses are cross-listed in Modern and Classical Languages and the Honors Program and are International Studies atributes. The courses are not required for study abroad programs.
PRE-DEPARTURE COURSES: CROSS-CULTURAL PREPARATION FOR STUDY ABROAD CROSS-CULTURAL INQUIRY FOR STUDY ABROAD
If you intend to study abroad, you will board the plane with greater confidence having taken the 1-credit course Cross-Cultural Prep for Study Abroad before going. Through films, literature, current events, and the treasure-trove of personal stories of foreign-born guest speakers, international students, past study abroad participants, and the instructor’s own twenty-five years of living and working overseas, the pre-departure course opens you to see the world as a cultural explorer. This course is designed for students majoring in any field who aspire to develop greater cross-cultural competence through their experience studying outside the United States. By simultaneously registering for the Cross-Cultural Inquiry course, you can earn an additional 1 credit and further explore the complexity of cultural influences and your host country. Weekly 50-minute class meetings.
COURSE UPON RETURNING: CROSS-CULTURAL
RE-ENTRY FROM STUDY ABROAD
Unfortunately, there are precious few people on campus that will, or even can, begin to understand the frustration of a returning study abroad student.

Is what you've seen and heard and experienced while studying abroad still replaying in your mind? If you don't want those images, stories and insights to be lost in the whirlwind of activity back on campus in St. Louis, consider taking the 1-credit course Cross-Cultural Re-Entry from Study Abroad. Discussion themes and assignments give you a framework for moving from exclamations “It was awesome” to a clearer understanding why living outside the U.S. was awesome for you and what it can mean in your life. The course begins in the third week of the semester, running for 9-10 weeks with weekly 75-minute class meetings.
