The Global Villa: Via Appia



Via Appia, the Italian Floor in the Global Villa, is created for students with a passion for exploring Italian culture through language by providing the opportunity to live with other students with similar interests in a learning community. Via Appia introduces students to cultural and linguistic diversity and teaches cultural understanding, a quality of increasing importance in our global society.




Via Appia will have a Foreign Language Teaching Assistant living within the community to facilitate many of the programs and linguistic development. Students focus on language learning through, for example, common course work, conversation, cultural events or a foreign film series. Students in this learning community will experience numerous special events drawn from our diverse ethnic communities in the city of St. Louis and the surrounding areas.

Program Requirements for Via Appia

  • Completion of application form and interview;
  • GPA: 3.0 or higher, 3.0 in languages courses at SLU;
  • strong interest in pursuing at least a Certificate in Italian
  • All students are co-enrolled in MLNG 293: Cultural Connections: The Global Villa (0-1 credit course) in conjunction with an Italian course appropriate to the student's level. First year students will also be involved in the co-enrollment of:
    ..... HIST 112: Origins of the Modern World 1500 to the Present
    ..... POLS 193: Politics of the Developing World
    Ideally, students co-enroll in both courses but must take either HIST 112 or POLS 193. Click here to see this semester's schedule.

Application Process

  • Complete Online Housing Application through mySLU requesting Language Learning Community.
  • Complete supplemental Global Villa application.

Notre Dame Description:

Notre Dame is a community for upperclassmen and freshmen students. Consisting of mostly single rooms, Notre Dame provides a unique blend of an academic and social atmosphere. Notre Dame will also be the home to Via Appia.
