Arts & Sciences Excellence in
Teaching Awards
and
Excellence in Mentoring Award

Faculty from the College of Arts & Sciences as well as students with declared majors in the College are encouraged to submit nominations for the College’s Annual Excellence Awards. One full-time professor in each of the College divisions (humanities, sciences, social sciences) will be chosen for an Excellence in Teaching Award. An Excellence in Mentoring Award will be given to one full-time faculty member from the College. Submit your nominations along with a one to two page narrative (the areas to be covered are listed on the nomination form) by interoffice mail to: College of Arts and Sciences, Verhaegen Hall, Room 321, ATTN: Linda Thien or by email to thienlr@slu.edu. The deadline for submissions is December 12, 2008.

THEOLOGY PROFESSOR WINS Alpha Sigma Nu (ASN) BOOK AWARD


Dr. James Kelhoffer, Associate Professor of Theological Studies, is a winning author in Alpha Sigma Nu's 29th Annual Book Award competition.
Dr. Kelhoffer's book "The Diet of John the Baptist," was chosen from entries submitted from the 33 member Jesuit institutions of higher education.
Selection of the winning books is done by Alpha Sigma Nu, Jesuit Honor Society and the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, which supervises the competition.

The monetary award of $1,000 has been sent to Dr. Kelhoffer in Germany, where he is currently on the faculty of Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich. He will return to Saint Louis University next year, and his
Book Award plaque will be presented during the Triennial Convention of Alpha Sigma Nu. The convention will be held at Saint Louis University, October 8-10, 2009.

Previous SLU winners of the Award, which is open to all administrators and faculty of Jesuit colleges and universities. include Dr. Charlotte Royeen, Doisy College of Health Sciences; Dr. Manoz Patanker, Parks College; and Dr. Timothy Lomperis, Political Science.


ITS has added Emergency Classroom Technology Support: 977-4099


ITS has added emergency technology support to all general classrooms (registrar scheduled). If you are having technical problems with the technology in one of these rooms, you can call 977-4099 to get immediate help, from either a campus or cell phone. This special number will be prioritized to be answered before all other technical help calls. The number is in operation from 7:30 am to 10:00 pm and will be staffed by the members of the ITS Service Desk and an on-campus analyst during evening hours. Help will be available over the phone and an analyst will be dispatched if on site service is necessary.

This support is only for emergency situations in classrooms. If you are reporting a problem that is not affecting a classroom you are presently teaching in, please do not use this number, instead please call the ITS Service Desk at 977-4000, or send an email to helpdesk@slu.edu.

Museum of Contemprary Religious Art (MOCRA) 15th anniversary exhibitions: Pursuit of the Spirit
MOCRA presents the first of two exhibitions celebrating the museum's first fifteen years. Drawing primarily on the MOCRA collection, Pursuit of the Spirit places works in dialogue in order to examine major themes that have emerged in MOCRA's first 35 exhibitions. English
Dr. Thomas M. Walsh, Associate Professor of English, has compiled and posted Walter J. Ong, S. J.: A Bibliography 1929-2006. Consisting of 457 original publications of Father Ong’s works, this bibliography contains 909 entries, with reprints, revisions, translations, and other materials. The edition was prepared for the Walter J. Ong, S.J., Center for Language and Culture at Saint Louis University. The
bibliography constitutes the most complete and accurate register of his published works through 2006. Dr. Walsh will update it periodically, as reprints and other additions become known. Walter J. Ong. S. J.: A Bibliography 1929-2006 will be available in Language, Culture, and Identity: The Legacy of Walter J. Ong, S. J., edited by Sara van den Berg and Thomas M. Walsh (Cresskill, New Jersey: Hampton Press, in press).

History
Dr. James Hitchcock was interviewed on the newly released dvd, John XXIII, originally a television miniseries.


Modern and Classical Languages
Dr. Yelena Belyaeva Standen authored an article "Rechevye akty v
culture: urovni vzaimodeistvia" (Speech acts and culture - levels of
Interaction) in the scholarly journal Theoretical and applied aspects of language description and intercultural communication v.2, published by Voronezh University press (in Russian).

Political Science
Dr. Tim Lomperis participated in a Roundtable Panel titled "The Role of Canada in International Relations" at the Midwest Association of Canadian Studies. This was a joint conference of the Midwest Association of Canadian Studies, the International Studies Association--Midwest, and the Central Slavic Conference that was held in Saint Louis, Nov. 7-9, 2008.

Psychology
Graduate Students, Princess Osei-Bonsu and Melissa Maglione, and Dr. Terri L. Weaver presented a poster titled "The posttraumatic growth inventory: A cross-validation study" at the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, November, 2008.

Dr. Terri Weaver and graduate students, Jon Hinrichs and Meagan Howell, presented a poster titled, "Impact of Injury Description on Scar-Rated Cognitive Appraisals" at the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, November, 2008.
