ANNUAL COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES EXCELLENCE AWARDS CEREMONY

The annual College of Arts and Sciences Excellence Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 from 3-5 p.m. in the St. Francis Xavier (College) Church Ballroom.

Faculty from the College of Arts & Sciences as well as students with declared majors in the College are encouraged to submit nominations for the College's Annual Excellence Awards. One full-time professor in each of the College divisions (humanities, sciences, social sciences) will be chosen for an Excellence in Teaching Award. An Excellence in Mentoring Award will be given to one full-time faculty member from the College.

Submit your nominations by dropping it off in Fusz Hall, Second Floor or by email to thienlr@slu.edu.

The Reinert Center for Teaching Excellence is pleased to announce two new resources for faculty. The Center is now publishing a monthly electronic newsletter on Learning Technologies. The October 2006 issue can be accessed online at:

Please send an e-mail to Sandy Gambill at gambill@slu.edu if you would like to receive the newsletter via e-mail each month or if you would like to suggest a topic to be covered.

The Center has also debuted a new website resource area called “The Reading Room” at http://cte.slu.edu The Reading Room will offer a small select group of resources on different teaching topics. The current topic is Teaching Millennial Students. Upcoming topics include plagiarism and classroom civility. Again, contact Sandy Gambill at gambill@slu.edu if you would like to suggest a topic for the Reading Room.

Twilight Retreat:
Sandra Spencer will present "Companions on the Journey: An Advent Reflection" at the Advent Twilight Retreat from 5-8:30 p.m. at Manresa Center. Ms. Spencer is an experienced retreat director and former director of pastoral care at SLU Hospital. The evening is open to all faculty and staff. The program will include a simple meal, presentations and time for personal reflection. Cost: $5.00. For more information, call mission programs at 977-2428.

Faculty Publications, Presentations, Awards

Modern and Classical Languages
Dr. Kathleen Llewellyn, Assistant Professor of French, presented "Death Defines Her: The Widow in Early Modern French Literature" at a recent meeting of the Midwest Modern Language Association in Chicago.

Theological Studies
“Relationships, Sex, Family, and Marriage,” an
Undergraduate Theology Conference, was hosted at Saint Louis
University November 10-12, 2007, with sponsorship from
Theological Studies, Theology Club, VOICES, Great Issues
Committee, and the Manresa Program in Catholic, Jesuit
Studies. Undergraduate papers were presented by students
representing Saint Louis University, Fontbonne University,
Loras College (Iowa), and University of St. Mary (Kansas).
The conference was created through the work of an
undergraduate student team from SLU: Rachelle Beabout,
Russell Brewer, Christina Gebel, Brian Jennings, and
Mackensie Roland.

Dr. Ronald Modras presented the 12th annual Pope John XXIII Lecture for the Fellowship of Southern Illinois Laity titled "Professor, Prefect, Pontiff: the Three Lives of Pope Benedict XVI.
