Arts and Sciences Technology Survey

The A&S Faculty Council Technology Committee is conducting a survey on technology issues within the College. The survey looks at three basic areas: Technology Needs, Service, and Email.
The survey should take about
5-10 minutes to complete. All Faculty, Staff, and Teaching
and Researching Graduate Students are asked to
participate in the survey which will be used for future planning within the College.
Please take a few minutes to complete this survey on something that is continuing to influence our daily lives more and more.

ANNUAL COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES EXCELLENCE AWARDS CEREMONY

The annual College of Arts and Sciences Excellence Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 from 3-5 p.m. in the St. Francis Xavier (College) Church Ballroom.

Faculty from the College of Arts & Sciences as well as students with declared majors in the College are encouraged to submit nominations for the College's Annual Excellence Awards. One full-time professor in each of the College divisions (humanities, sciences, social sciences) will be chosen for an Excellence in Teaching Award. An Excellence in Mentoring Award will be given to one full-time faculty member from the College.

Submit your nominations by dropping it off in Fusz Hall, Second Floor or by email to thienlr@slu.edu.

The Reinert Center for Teaching Excellence is pleased to announce two new resources for faculty. The Center is now publishing a monthly electronic newsletter on Learning Technologies. The October 2006 issue can be accessed online at:

The Center has also debuted a new website resource area called “The Reading Room” at http://cte.slu.edu The Reading Room will offer a small select group of resources on different teaching topics. The current topic is Teaching Millennial Students. Upcoming topics include plagiarism and classroom civility. Again, contact Sandy Gambill at gambill@slu.edu if you would like to suggest a topic for the Reading Room.

Twilight Retreat:
Sandra Spencer will present "Companions on the Journey: An Advent Reflection" at the Advent Twilight Retreat from 5-8:30 p.m. at Manresa Center. Ms. Spencer is an experienced retreat director and former director of pastoral care at SLU Hospital. The evening is open to all faculty and staff. The program will include a simple meal, presentations and time for personal reflection. Cost: $5.00. For more information, call mission programs at 977-2428.

Faculty Publications, Presentations, Awards

American Studies
Dr. Matthew Mancini presented a paper titled "The Agony of Francis Lieber: The Tragedy Behind General Orders No. 100" at the annual conference of the Southern Historical Association in Birmingham, Alabama.

English
Dr. Harold K. Bush gave a lecture at Baylor University titled "Mark Twain's Invisible Domain: The Christian Imagination of America's Most Famous Author" on November 10, 2006. The lecture was for the 2006 Lilly Fellows Program National Research Conference, "The World and Christian Imagination," sponsored by Baylor's Institute for Faith and Learning.

Philosophy
Michael Barber, S.J. authored "Philosophy and Reflection: A Critique of Frank Welz's Sociological and 'Processual' Criticism of Husserl and
Schutz," published in Human Studies.
