Arts and Sciences Technology Survey

The A&S Faculty Council Technology Committee is conducting a survey on technology issues within the College. The survey looks at three basic areas: Technology Needs, Service, and Email.
The survey should take about
5-10 minutes to complete. All Faculty, Staff, and Teaching
and Researching Graduate Students are asked to
participate in the survey which will be used for future planning within the College.
Please take a few minutes to complete this survey on something that is continuing to influence our daily lives more and more.

ANNUAL COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES EXCELLENCE AWARDS CEREMONY

The annual College of Arts and Sciences Excellence Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 from 3-5 p.m. in the St. Francis Xavier (College) Church Ballroom.

Faculty from the College of Arts & Sciences as well as students with declared majors in the College are encouraged to submit nominations for the College's Annual Excellence Awards. One full-time professor in each of the College divisions (humanities, sciences, social sciences) will be chosen for an Excellence in Teaching Award. An Excellence in Mentoring Award will be given to one full-time faculty member from the College.

Submit your nomination by dropping it off in Fusz Hall, Second Floor or by email to thienlr@slu.edu.

The Reinert Center for Teaching Excellence: Learning to Teach On-Line

The Reinert Center for Teaching Excellence is pleased to announce two new resources for faculty. The Center is now publishing a monthly electronic newsletter on Learning Technologies. The October 2006 issue can be accessed online at:

ACADEMIC NEWS

Faculty Publications, Presentations, Awards

American Studies
Dr. Joseph Heathcott authored an article titled "The Century Building Debacle and the Future of Historic Preservation" which was published in the October issue of The Next American City magazine. Dr. Heathcott authored "Score One for Modernism: Historic Neighborhood Gardens in St. Louis," published in the December issue of Planning, the magazine of the American Planning Association. He authored a review essay titled "Curating the City: Challenges for Historic Preservation in the Twenty-First Century" in the Fall issue of the Journal of Planning History, and a book review in the Fall issue of the Journal of American History.

Mathematics and Computer Science
A Saint Louis University team, consisting of Joe Bauer, Tony Luehrs, Neil Munjal, Rehan Refai, Kevin Seats, and LaKiesha Tomlin, competed in the sixty-seventh annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition on December 2, 2006. Dr. Greg Marks is the faculty supervisor of SLU's Putnam Competition team. The Putnam Competition is the premier mathematical contest among colleges and universities throughout North America; an estimated 3,600 undergraduates from 500 institutions throughout will be designated as Putnam Fellows and awarded cash prizes. In the past, Putnam Fellows have gone on to win two Nobel Prizes in Physics and three Fields Medals in Mathematics.

Theological Studies
Dr. Tobias Winright authored "Hawks and Doves: Rival Versions of Just War Theory," published in The Christian Century 123/25 (December 12, 2006): 32-35.
