For more information, visit the website or call 977-7170.
Opening Reception on Sunday, February 3, 3-5 p.m.
Using computer modeling technology, Chinese artist Miao Xiaochun recreated Michelangelo’s famous Sistine Chapel painting of the Last Judgment as a virtual environment. From this virtual environment the artist has made five large digital prints and a video animation. Through these works the viewer becomes a participant in the scene, able to consider the more than 400 characters in the original painting from a variety of new perspectives. The result is fresh insight into a masterpiece of art history and into the questions about ultimate meaning it confronts.

External Funding, Research Productivity

Philosophy
Kent Staley Ph.D from Philosophy Department, has been granted a National Science Foundation Scholar's Award for 2008-2009. The award will support research for his project, "The Reach of Experiment: Reasoning Securely About Fundamental Physics."

This project aims to advance toward an epistemology of science that covers the span from piecemeal experimental data-gathering to high-level abstract theorizing. It seeks to integrate perspectives from philosophical approaches to epistemology, methodological studies of theory confirmation, theories of statistical inference, and the study of science as an inherently social enterprise. The project attempts particularly to place an account of statistical evidence within a richer epistemological framework, and to use that framework to show how the accumulation of the results of tests of very specific experimental hypotheses can yield conclusions regarding the status of such highly general theories as the General Theory of Relativity.
